Diljit Dosanjh’s much-anticipated comedy-horror film Sardaarji 3 has been officially barred from theatrical release in India.
The decision follows rising tensions between India and Pakistan after the April 2025 Pahalgam terror attack, which prompted a cultural clampdown, including a boycott of Pakistani talent across Indian entertainment industries.
The film, scheduled to release internationally on June 27, features popular Pakistani actress Hania Aamir in a lead role. While she does not appear in the teaser, Aamir is prominently featured in the official trailer as a ghost hunter. The storyline revolves around a haunted mansion in the UK, with romantic subplots involving both Aamir and Neeru Bajwa vying for Dosanjh’s character.
However, Hania Aamir’s presence in the film has sparked criticism after allegations that she made anti-India remarks post-Operation Sindoor. Her Instagram account has since been blocked for Indian users, further fueling the controversy.
The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) lodged a formal complaint with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), urging it to block the film’s domestic release due to the inclusion of multiple Pakistani actors. Responding to the mounting backlash, the film’s producers opted to restrict Sardaarji 3 to overseas markets.
Dosanjh confirmed the update via Instagram, captioning the trailer post: “Sardaar Ji 3 Releasing 27th June OVERSEAS Only/ FADH LAO BHOOND DIAN LATTAN.” The trailer has been geo-blocked for Indian viewers, although teasers and songs remain accessible.
The ban underscores the growing cultural fallout amid diplomatic strains, and signals a challenging climate for cross-border artistic collaborations.
