Israel Strikes Iran’s Fordow Site, Tehran Responds With Missile Barrage Amid Escalating Conflict

The Israel-Iran conflict escalated sharply on Monday, June 23, as Israel targeted Iran’s Fordow nuclear facility and six military airbases in a coordinated assault, prompting a fierce missile retaliation from Tehran.

This new round of cross-border strikes followed the United States’ major bombing of Iranian nuclear sites a day earlier, heightening fears of a full-blown regional war as the hostilities entered their 11th day.

According to Israeli military officials, the latest Israeli attacks destroyed multiple helicopters, fighter jets, and missile sites, including damage to Fordow, a heavily fortified underground nuclear facility. Meanwhile, Iran launched multiple missiles at Israeli cities, with reports of explosions in northern Tehran and air raid sirens blaring across Israeli cities for over half an hour.

Iran’s health ministry reported over 400 fatalities from Israeli strikes since June 13, while Israel said 24 people have been killed in Iran’s retaliatory attacks, including the latest hit on a Red Crescent building in Tehran.

Iran’s military issued a stern warning to the United States, cautioning of “serious, unpredictable consequences” for its direct involvement and stating that Washington has now become a legitimate target. Iranian officials accused the US of launching its attack during ongoing diplomatic discussions, branding it a “betrayal of diplomacy.”

Meanwhile, the United Nations Security Council convened an emergency session, with Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urging restraint and warning against a dangerous cycle of revenge. The UK, France, and Germany echoed calls for de-escalation, as global leaders expressed concern about the conflict’s potential to spiral out of control.

The Pentagon confirmed that the US deployed seven B-2 stealth bombers, which dropped 14 GBU-57 “bunker-buster” bombs during Sunday’s Operation Midnight Hammer, aimed at crippling Iran’s nuclear infrastructure at Isfahan, Natanz, and Fordow.

President Donald Trump, who ordered the strikes, described them as causing “monumental damage” and reiterated his claim of “obliterating” Iran’s nuclear program. He hinted at potential regime change in Tehran and said “Iran must now agree to end this war.” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly thanked Trump, declaring the operation had brought Israel closer to its strategic objectives.

Meanwhile, China condemned the US strikes, warning of the risks of regional instability affecting global energy and trade, especially via the Strait of Hormuz. Oil prices surged more than 4% on Monday in reaction to the escalating situation.
