In a sharp political escalation, Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha launched his first public attack on former ally Arvind Kejriwal after merging with the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Chadha backed the BJP’s allegations surrounding the ‘Sheesh Mahal 2’ controversy, claiming that the issue played a significant role in the Aam Aadmi Party’s defeat in the Delhi Assembly elections.
Chadha’s ‘Sheesh Mahal 2’ Attack
Speaking to the media, Chadha said that images of a lavish residence linked to Kejriwal had surfaced again, reigniting the controversy.
“Sheesh Mahal Part Two has come in Delhi… If there was one major reason for AAP’s loss, this was it,” he said.
His remarks echoed earlier accusations made by BJP leaders, who have consistently targeted Kejriwal over alleged extravagant spending on official residences.
BJP vs AAP: War Over Images
The BJP recently released images of a bungalow allegedly linked to Kejriwal, claiming it featured high-end interiors funded through improper means.
However, the AAP strongly rejected the allegations:
- Called the images “fake and baseless”
- Claimed they were sourced from the internet
- Accused BJP of spreading misinformation
AAP leader Atishi even alleged that the images were “downloaded from Pinterest” to defame Kejriwal.
What is the ‘Sheesh Mahal’ Controversy?
The controversy dates back to the renovation of Kejriwal’s official residence at 6, Flagstaff Road in Delhi.
A report by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) highlighted:
- Initial estimate: ₹7.91 crore
- Final cost: ₹33.66 crore
- Alleged procedural lapses and cost escalation
The BJP has repeatedly used the term “Sheesh Mahal” to criticise Kejriwal’s lifestyle and governance priorities.
Political Context: AAP Split and BJP Boost
Chadha’s remarks come just days after a major political shift, where he and six other AAP Rajya Sabha MPs announced their merger with the BJP.
The move is expected to strengthen the BJP-led NDA in the Upper House, while deepening the crisis within AAP.
