ICC sanctions Bangladeshi cricketers

Bangladeshi cricketers Nahida Akter and Sarmin Sultana received sanctions from the International Cricket Council (ICC) for breaching the Code of Conduct during the second ODI against Sri Lanka.

Nahida Akter violated Article 2.5 by making a provocative gesture after dismissing Sri Lankan captain Chamari Athapaththu in the 17th over. She pointed toward the pavilion in a sendoff deemed unacceptable. Sarmin Sultana breached Article 2.8 after being adjudged LBW in the 16th over of Bangladesh’s innings. She expressed dissent by gesturing toward her bat and delaying her departure from the pitch.

The ICC fined both players 10 per cent of their match fees and added one demerit point each to their disciplinary records. These penalties mark their first offences within a 24‑month period. Match officials Eloise Sheridan, Rokeya Sultana, Dolly Rani Sarkar, and Shathira Jakir Jesy reported the incidents. ICC Match Referee Supriya Rani Das confirmed the sanctions after both players admitted their actions.

Under ICC regulations, Level 1 breaches carry penalties ranging from reprimands to fines of up to 50 per cent of match fees, along with one or two demerit points. The ICC emphasised that maintaining discipline on the field is essential for the integrity of the game.

Sri Lanka won the second ODI to level the three‑match series 1‑1, setting up a decisive final match.
