Continuous heavy rainfall has triggered a severe flood situation in Odisha’s Jajpur district following a massive 70-foot breach in the embankment of the Kani River.
The sudden surge of water has inundated multiple villages across Dasarathpur and Jajpur blocks, trapping residents and disrupting normal life.
Villages Submerged, Families Displaced
The collapse of the river embankment near the Dasarathpur area allowed torrents of floodwater to rush into surrounding residential areas and agricultural fields. Among the worst affected are over 10 villages falling under Kasapa, Tarapada, and Mallikapur panchayats.
With water entering houses within hours, distressed families—carrying young children and basic essentials—were forced to flee their homes and take shelter on elevated river embankments and temporary relief points.
Administration Mobilises Relief and Rescue
Local authorities have moved quickly to assess the situation and provide emergency support to those displaced. The Block Development Officer (BDO) confirmed that immediate relief measures are underway.

Food Distribution: Affected families stranded on embankments and high ground are being provided with dry rations and cooked meals.

Emergency Rescue: Teams from the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) and the Fire Services department have been deployed to rescue people trapped in deep-water zones.
Local authorities continue to monitor water levels in the Kani River, while engineering teams prepare to plug the breach once current flow speeds abate. Safe evacuation remains the top priority.
