The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has confirmed that rainfall intensity across Odisha has begun to ease, with no district under heavy rain warning from today until August 22.

However, isolated heavy showers may occur in northern and interior districts, while fresh alerts are in place for northeast Odisha from August 23.

In the past 24 hours, Mayurbhanj’s Bahalda recorded 273 mm rainfall, Raighar 180 mm, Baragada’s Jhadabandh 150 mm, and Jamda 124 mm. The state average stood at 23.3 mm, which is 82% above normal.

Meanwhile, the flood situation is showing gradual improvement, though complete normalcy may take 3–4 days, according to Chief Engineer Dillip Rout. The water level in the Baitarani river is slowly receding, while conditions in Salandi, Budhabalanga and Subarnarekha rivers remain stable.

Authorities are keeping special watch on Baitarani and Brahmani rivers, with water release from Rengali dam being closely monitored. Some low‑lying areas in Jajpur, Bhadrak, Baleshwar, Mayurbhanj, Kendujhar and Kendrapada remain inundated, affecting over 9.4 lakh people across 1,381 villages in 74 blocks. Relief centres are operational, and ODRAF and NDRF teams are deployed.

Officials said if rainfall subsides further, floodwaters will gradually recede, bringing relief to affected districts.
