An alarming surge in violence against women has sent shockwaves through the capital city, after three separate incidents of sexual assault and harassment were reported within a single day.
Prompt action by the Commissionerate Police led to the apprehension of three suspects across different jurisdictions.
The first incident occurred on Tuesday morning within the Bharatpur police station limits. According to police reports, the accused forcibly entered a survivor’s residence and committed rape. The victim’s mother immediately filed a complaint, prompting officers to initiate a swift investigation. After gathering preliminary evidence, police detained the suspect and transferred the survivor to Capital Hospital for a medical examination. Further legal procedures are underway, and the suspect will be formally remanded in court shortly.
In a second case registered at the Chandrasekharpur police station, a landlord was accused of raping a woman employed as a cook at his residence. The suspect, identified as Ranjan Kumar Maharana, allegedly sexually assaulted the victim and threatened her against disclosing the incident. However, the survivor managed to escape and reported the ordeal to the police. Officers took immediate action to apprehend Maharana, who is now facing trial proceedings.
Meanwhile, the Airfield police arrested a self-styled godman, identified as Bishnu Charan Dash, following allegations of molestation and misconduct. Reports indicate that Dash used his spiritual facade to misbehave with a young woman. Upon receiving the victim’s complaint, the police acted swiftly to take him into custody.
The rapid succession of these three incidents has reignited fierce public debate over the safety of women in Bhubaneswar. With similar crimes increasingly reported in the capital, citizens and activists are raising urgent concerns regarding law enforcement vigilance and public security measures.
