India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Warning for several districts in Odisha as the state prepares for a prolonged spell of hot and dry weather.
According to the latest forecast, dry conditions are expected to persist from April 14 to April 20, with no significant rainfall likely. This could lead to steadily rising temperatures and increased discomfort across the region.
Hot and Humid Conditions in Coastal Districts
Coastal and nearby districts are likely to experience hot and humid weather, which may feel more intense due to high moisture levels.
Affected areas include:
Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati.
These conditions may increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, such as dehydration and heat exhaustion, especially for vulnerable groups.
Heatwave to Intensify in Western Odisha
The IMD has warned that heatwave conditions will gradually develop and expand across western and interior districts:
- April 15–16: Balangir, Kandhamal, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur
- April 16–17: Sonepur, Boudh, Angul
- April 17–18: Nuapada, Nabarangpur
- April 18–20: Sundargarh, Dhenkanal, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj
The spread indicates a worsening heatwave trend, particularly in inland regions.
What Residents Should Do
Authorities have advised everyone to take simple but effective precautions to stay safe during this period:
- Avoid going outdoors during peak afternoon hours
- Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated
- Wear light, breathable cotton clothing
- Take extra care of children, older adults, and outdoor workers
No Immediate Relief Expected
With no rainfall forecast in the coming days, heat levels are expected to remain high across Odisha. Residents may experience increasing discomfort as summer conditions intensify.
Staying informed and following safety measures will be essential to reduce health risks during this heatwave.
