The sacred festival of Jhamu Yatra was observed with great devotion at the revered Maa Sarala Temple in Jagatsinghpur on Tuesday, attracting thousands of devotees from across the region.
The annual festival reflects Odisha’s rich spiritual traditions, bringing communities together in faith and cultural celebration.
Grand Procession Marks the Beginning
As part of the traditional rituals, the idol of Goddess Maa Sarala was carried in a beautifully decorated palanquin (bimana) from the temple to the nearby Charaki ground, close to the Nanda temple.
The procession was filled with chants, music, and a strong sense of devotion, creating a vibrant spiritual atmosphere for participants of all ages.
Fire-Walking Ritual Highlights the Festival
One of the most striking aspects of Jhamu Yatra is the fire-walking ritual, performed by Ghata Sevakas—devotees who take sacred vows and travel across villages spreading the message and glory of the Goddess.
At the Charaki ground, these devotees completed their spiritual journey by walking barefoot over burning embers. This act symbolises faith, endurance, and deep devotion, and is considered a sacred offering to Maa Sarala.
Special Rituals and Cultural Significance
Special पूजा rituals and ceremonial practices were conducted throughout the day at the temple, highlighting the spiritual importance of the festival.
Jhamu Yatra is not only a religious observance but also a reflection of Odisha’s living cultural heritage, where traditions are preserved and passed down through generations.
Administration Ensures Safety and Smooth Arrangements
Given the large turnout, local authorities made extensive arrangements to ensure a smooth and safe celebration. These included:
- Crowd management measures
- Enhanced security deployment
- Basic facilities for devotees
These efforts helped maintain order while allowing everyone to participate comfortably in the festivities.
A Celebration of Faith and Tradition
Jhamu Yatra continues to stand as a powerful symbol of devotion and unity in Odisha. The festival beautifully showcases the deep-rooted connection between spirituality, tradition, and community life.
