Nepal Home Minister Sudan Gurung Resigns Over Financial Misconduct Allegations, Blow to Balen Shah Government

In a significant political development, Sudan Gurung has resigned from his post as Home Minister of Nepal following allegations of financial misconduct.

Gurung, who assumed office on March 27, stepped down amid growing criticism over alleged business links and questionable share transactions involving a controversial businessman.

Cites Ethics and Accountability

Announcing his resignation, Gurung stated that his decision was guided by ethical responsibility and the need to ensure a fair investigation.

“For me, ethics is greater than position… public life must be clean and leadership must be accountable,” he said.

He added that stepping down would eliminate any conflict of interest and uphold public trust in governance.

Impact on PM Balen Shah’s Government

The resignation is seen as a major setback for the government led by Balendra Shah, who has now taken charge of the Home Ministry portfolio.

The development comes at a crucial time as Shah’s administration, backed by reformist promises, faces increasing scrutiny over transparency and accountability.

Gen Z Movement Influence

Gurung also referenced the rising influence of youth-led protests in Nepal, particularly the recent Gen Z movement demanding cleaner governance and systemic reforms.

He acknowledged that these public sentiments played a role in reinforcing the importance of accountability in leadership.

Political Turbulence Continues

The resignation follows earlier controversy within the government. On April 9, Labour Minister Dip Kumar Sah was dismissed over allegations of misuse of power.

The ruling coalition, supported by the Rastriya Swatantra Party led by Ravi Lamichhane, had come to power after mass protests in 2025 that toppled the previous government.

Background: Reform Mandate Under Pressure

The current government rose to prominence following widespread anti-corruption protests and promises of transparent governance. However, repeated controversies are now testing its credibility.

Gurung’s resignation underscores the challenges faced by reform-driven administrations in maintaining public trust while navigating political pressures.
