In a deeply emotional and inspiring act of compassion, a grieving mother from Odisha donated the eyes of her daughter who died in a tragic road accident in Bhubaneswar, giving the gift of sight to others even in the midst of unimaginable loss.

Twenty-seven-year-old Barsarani Behera, daughter of former Bari Block Samiti chairperson Bharati Behera from Jajpur district, lost her life in a devastating accident on the Baramunda flyover in Bhubaneswar on May 9. The tragic mishap also claimed the lives of two other bike riders, sending shockwaves across the city and leaving residents mourning the heartbreaking incident.

Barsarani, who worked at a private company, was reportedly returning home on her scooter when the fatal accident took place. After receiving the tragic news, her mother Bharati Behera rushed to the hospital and made a courageous decision that has now touched countless hearts across Odisha.

Despite enduring immense grief, Bharati chose to donate her daughter’s eyes to the Drushti Daan Eye Bank so that others could continue to see the world through Barsarani’s vision. Family members said the mother believed her daughter’s light should continue to shine in the lives of others even after her untimely passing.

The emotional gesture has received widespread praise on social media and from people across the state, with many describing Bharati Behera’s decision as a powerful example of humanity, courage and social responsibility. Citizens, activists and well-wishers have hailed the eye donation as an inspiring reminder that organ donation can create hope and transform lives, even during moments of profound sorrow.

Many people also praised the family for raising awareness about eye donation and encouraging others to support lifesaving and vision-restoring causes. Barsarani’s memory now lives on through a selfless act that may help bring light to people waiting for a second chance at sight.
