Mark Zuckerberg Apologises

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has conveyed his apologies to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Government of India for the presence of CSAM (Child Sexual Abuse Material), deepfake content, and operational errors on Meta’s platforms.

According to government sources cited by CNBC TV18, Zuckerberg expressed regret over the lapses and assured corrective measures. Meta reportedly admitted that money had been paid for boosting certain types of content, acknowledging the mistake and pledging to strengthen internal checks.

Officials clarified that Meta was informed it does not qualify as an intermediary under India’s IT Act definition, and therefore safe‑harbour protection under the Act is not applicable.

The apology follows heightened regulatory attention on digital platforms over harmful and manipulated content. Government sources said Meta has committed to improving moderation systems and compliance mechanisms to prevent recurrence.

The episode underscores India’s firm stance on accountability and transparency in the digital ecosystem, especially concerning child‑safety and misinformation.
