Low‑Pressure System Crawls Across Odisha, Causing Widespread Flooding

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has identified the slow‑moving low‑pressure system over the Bay of Bengal as the primary cause of the ongoing heavy rainfall and flooding across Odisha.

The system, which developed over the Northwest Bay of Bengal on July 25, intensified into a depression and deep depression by July 26 but has moved at an exceptionally sluggish pace. Even after four days, it remains near Jharsuguda, having travelled less than 500 kilometres since formation.

Meteorologists say this slow movement has led to prolonged heavy to very heavy rainfall, triggering flood situations in several northern and central districts. Rivers such as Baitarani and Salandi have crossed danger levels, inundating low‑lying areas, farmlands, and residential zones.

Districts including Bhadrak, Jajpur, and others have reported extensive waterlogging, damaged roads, and disruption of normal life. Schools, colleges, and Anganwadi centres have been closed in many affected areas as a precautionary measure.

Weather experts warn that the system’s sluggish nature may extend the rainfall spell, raising concerns over further deterioration of the flood situation. Relief teams and local administrations remain on high alert as Odisha continues to battle the relentless downpour.
