The Ballon d’Or 2026 race has entered its final stretch, with Kylian Mbappe, Lamine Yamal and Harry Kane among the biggest names making a case for football’s most prestigious individual award.
The 30-man shortlist was announced earlier this month, with defending champion Ousmane Dembele, Lionel Messi, Mbappe, Yamal and Kane all included. The winner will be announced at the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London on October 26.
Unlike several recent editions dominated by a small group of established stars, this year’s field has produced considerable debate over how the leading candidates compare.
Mbappe Backs His Own Case
Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe has made no secret of his belief that his performances deserve recognition.
Speaking to France Football, Mbappe pointed to his goalscoring record in major competitions, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he finished as the tournament’s leading scorer.
His season included 25 La Liga goals and 15 in the Champions League, while he scored 10 times at the World Cup, according to the source report.
However, Real Madrid’s Champions League campaign ended in the quarter-finals, while France finished fourth at the World Cup. That has added another dimension to the debate over how much weight should be given to Mbappe’s individual numbers compared with team achievements.
Yamal Believes It Could Be His Year
Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal has also openly backed himself for the award.
Yamal finished second in last year’s Ballon d’Or voting and believes his 2025-26 season, which included a La Liga title with Barcelona and a World Cup triumph with Spain, gives him a strong claim.
“I honestly believe there are two (Kylian Mbappe and him) of us who are the best in the world, and this year I’d deserve it because of what I’ve won,” Yamal said in an interview clip shared by Spanish streaming platform Movistar.
The 18-year-old scored 16 goals and registered 11 assists in 28 La Liga appearances during the 2025-26 season. His World Cup numbers were more modest, with one goal and one assist.
Kane Brings Extraordinary Numbers
If Mbappe and Yamal have the major-tournament narrative, Harry Kane has an imposing statistical case.
The Bayern Munich striker scored 73 goals for club and country during the 2025-26 season, according to Reuters. He also won the Bundesliga with Bayern and helped England finish third at the World Cup.
Kane has acknowledged the strength of the competition, with Mbappe and Yamal among the players he recognises as major contenders.
His case, however, is also being examined through the performances of Bayern and England as teams, rather than solely through his goalscoring numbers.
Messi Still In The Race
Eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi is also among the 30 nominees.
The Argentina captain guided his country to the World Cup final and won the MLS title with Inter Miami. At 39, Messi is attempting to add another Ballon d’Or to his record tally.
Other prominent names on the shortlist include defending champion Ousmane Dembele, Rodri, Michael Olise, Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Junior and Erling Haaland.
When Will The Ballon d’Or Winner Be Announced?
The 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony will take place on October 26 in London, marking the first time the event has been staged in the British capital. The ceremony will also mark the 70th anniversary of the award, which was first won by England legend Stanley Matthews in 1956.
With the shortlist confirmed, the final decision will be made through the Ballon d’Or voting process. The debate, meanwhile, remains open between players with very different cases — Mbappe’s goals, Yamal’s trophies and Kane’s extraordinary numbers among them.
