Lakshya Sen Jumps 5 Places To Become World’s Number 13

New Delhi: India’s ace shuttler Lakshya Sen jumped five places to reach world number 13 in the latest BWF rankings on Tuesday, following his impressive run at the All England Championships.

The 22-year-old from Almora boy had reached the semifinals in Birmingham, setting him up as world’s number 12 from the 15th spot in the Olympic Games Qualification.

Only the top 16 shuttlers in the world will make it to the Olympics by the end of April. Now India’s HS Prannoy is at number 9 in the Paris race and Sen too is aiming to make the cut.

In November 2022, Sen had reached his career-best ranking of world number six but his rankings plunged to world No. 25 in April last year. He made a comeback to 11th spot by August but fell again to 20 this year following many early exits.

Throughout the season, his quest for Olympic qualification has been a rollercoaster ride, with a string of early exits, notably in Malaysia and India. However, his successful journey to the semifinals in both the French Open and All England has revitalised his Olympic hopes.

Among the Indian badminton players, HS Prannoy secured the ninth position, followed by Kidambi Srikanth at 27th, and Priyanshu Rajawat at 32nd.

In the women’s singles category, the two-time Olympic medallist, PV Sindhu, holds the 11th position.

The Indian men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty claimed the top spot.

Meanwhile, Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto are ranked 20th. Unfortunately, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand slipped to 26th place.
