New Delhi: May 12 is observed as International Nurses’ Day across the world to honour the services of nurses. It is the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, the English social reformer, statistician and founder of modern nursing.

Every year on this day, International Nurses Day is commemorated to honour nurses. Nurses are critical caregivers in a healthy society. Their amazing contribution has inspired their passion and hard effort in nursing during this pandemic.

The International Council of Nurses began commemorating International Nurses Day in 1965 (ICN). The legendary Florence Nightingale’s birthday falls on this day. She was a statistician, social reformer, and English nurse. She rose to prominence as a nurse manager and educator during the Crimean War, becoming a pillar of contemporary nursing. She established a reputation for nursing and became a Victorian cultural figure.

Dorothy Sutherland, an officer in the US Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, proposed this day, but it was not accepted. After 20 years, May 12 was finally selected as Florence Nightingale’s birthday. The International Council of Nurses (ICN) has been generating and disseminating materials and evidence on International Nurses’ Day since then.
