New Delhi: Every year on May 22, International Day for Biological Diversity is celebrated to awareness regarding biodiversity matters.
The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity announced the Biodiversity Day 2021 slogan: “We’re part of the solution”.
This year’s theme is in fact in continuation with the momentum generated in 2020. Last year’s theme was, “Our solutions are in nature.
In the past few decades, there has been widespread exploitation of resources without due consideration to its maintenance which resulted in damage to the environment. Of late, there have been widespread concerns to preserve and protect the ecosystem.
In this context, the United Nations General Assembly in late 1993 proclaimed May 22 as “The International Day for Biological Diversity” (IDB) to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues.
Despite technological advances by humans, we are completely dependent on healthy and vibrant ecosystems for our water, food, medicines, clothes, fuel, shelter energy among others.
