The Indian Navy is preparing to formally induct Nipun, the second Diving Support Vessel of the Nistar-class, on 31 August 2026 at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai.

The commissioning will mark a significant enhancement of the Navy’s specialised deep-sea diving and underwater support capabilities.

Designed and built entirely in India by Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), Visakhapatnam, Nipun stands as a clear demonstration of the country’s growing strength in defence shipbuilding. The vessel was handed over to the Indian Navy on 30 July 2026 after completing a rigorous programme of outfitting and extensive sea trials.

Purpose-built for demanding underwater operations, Nipun is equipped with modern diving systems and underwater intervention tools. These features will allow it to provide sustained support to divers operating in challenging conditions at sea. The ship will also play a key role in augmenting the Navy’s submarine rescue capabilities — a critical requirement for any modern maritime force.

Beyond its diving systems, Nipun incorporates advanced navigation equipment, sophisticated platform management systems, and precise station-keeping technology. Specialised medical facilities further enable the vessel to function as a fully integrated platform for complex sub-surface missions.

Once in service, Nipun will strengthen the Indian Navy’s ability to conduct specialised diving and underwater operations across India’s vast maritime areas of interest. Its induction also underscores the maturity of the domestic shipbuilding ecosystem in delivering technologically advanced and mission-specific platforms.

The commissioning of Nipun continues the journey that began with its sister ship and reinforces the Navy’s commitment to self-reliance under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. As the vessel transitions from construction to operational service, it opens a new chapter in India’s underwater operational readiness.
