Himanta Biswa Sarma took oath as Chief Minister of Assam for the second consecutive term on May 12, following the BJP-led NDA’s sweeping victory in the assembly polls.

The alliance secured a two-thirds majority, with the BJP winning 82 seats in the 126-member House, while allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) bagged 10 seats each.

Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office and secrecy to Sarma at the Veterinary Field in Khanapara, Guwahati. The ceremony witnessed the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, BJP national president Nitin Nabin, and over 40 NDA chief ministers and deputy chief ministers.

At 57, Sarma became the first non-Congress leader in Assam to assume charge for a second successive term. His leadership marks continuity for the NDA, which first came to power in the state in 2016 under Sarbananda Sonowal.

The new government is expected to focus on development, peace, and stability, while addressing challenges such as ethnic tensions, flood management, and employment generation.
