The Health Department in Odisha has confirmed four cases of scrub typhus in Sanabagadari village under Khamar CHC in Anugola district, prompting intensified surveillance and preventive measures.

Blood samples of suspected patients have been collected for testing, and a health team will visit the village regularly for 15 days to provide treatment and raise awareness.

Scrub typhus, caused by bites from tiny tick-like insects in grassy and bushy areas, can lead to fever, headache, and body ache. Anugola CDMO Dr Madan Mohan Pradhan confirmed the cases and said the disease is not new, but often mistaken for malaria. With diagnostic kits now available, scrub typhus can be identified more accurately.

Local MLA Ashok Mohanty has urged immediate action, warning that tick-borne fever can be dangerous and may cause complications. He said discussions with the administration have ensured that healthcare teams and experts will be sent for testing and monitoring.

Preventive medicines are being distributed, and residents have been advised to remain alert but not panic.

Meanwhile, a patient at VIMSAR, Burla, who tested positive for scrub typhus, died while undergoing treatment. The individual also suffered from kidney problems and other illnesses. Authorities are investigating whether scrub typhus was the direct cause of death.

The administration has assured that necessary steps are being taken to control the spread and safeguard people in the affected village.
