Former District Labour Officer Convicted In Bribery Case

Cuttack: A Special Vigilance Court in Sundargarh today convicted Maheswar Kar, former District Labour Officer (Retired) of Rourkela, in a bribery case and sentenced him to undergo rigorous imprisonment (RI).

According to reports, Maheswar Kar, Ex-District Labour Officer (Retired), Office of Deputy Labour Commissioner of Rourkela in Sundargarh, was charge-sheeted by Odisha Vigilance in Sambalpur Vigilance P.S. Case No.47 dated 02.05.2001 U/s 13(2) r/w 13(1)(d)/7 Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988/34 IPC for demand and acceptance of illegal gratification (bribe) from the complainant (Consultant) for granting no due/demand certificate to start other projects by the firm.

The Court of Special Judge, Vigilance, Sundargarh today convicted Kar and sentenced him to undergo rigorous imprisonment for a period of 2 years and to pay fine of Rs.5,000.

In default of payment of the fine, the convict shall undergo further rigorous imprisonment for a period of 3 months for the offence U/s 13(2) r/w 13(1)(d) of PC Act, 1988/34 IPC.

The Court further sentenced him to undergo rigorous imprisonment for a period of 1 year and to pay a fine of Rs.5,000, and in default of payment of fine, to undergo further rigorous imprisonment for a period of 3 months for the offence U/s 7 of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988/34 IPC. Both sentences are to run concurrently, the court ruled.

Odisha Vigilance will now move the competent authority for the stoppage of pension of Kar following his conviction. Naba Kishore Pattnaik, Ex-DSP, Vigilance, Rourkela Unit, had investigated the case and Gouramohan Dash, I/c Spl. P.P, Vigilance, Sundargarh conducted the case on behalf of the prosecution.
