Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh emphasised the importance of a strong clinical foundation in medical education while releasing the second edition of the Postgraduate Textbook of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition in New Delhi.
He stated that Artificial Intelligence can serve as a valuable enabler only when medical professionals first build sound clinical skills.
Dr Singh, a noted professor of medicine and diabetes, cautioned that reliance on AI without grasping core medical concepts risks weakening the learning process. He said competent clinicians must be capable of serving society even without advanced instruments or technology.
Highlighting the rapid expansion of medical knowledge, Dr Singh noted the growing pace of research and publication. He stressed that medical education must focus on conceptual clarity and hands-on training. He urged young professionals to strengthen their basics before pursuing specialisation.
The updated textbook, edited by Prof Anupam Sibal and Dr Sarath Gopalan, now includes 45 chapters covering emerging areas such as inflammatory bowel disease, neuro-gastroenterology, celiac disease, cow’s milk protein allergy, genetics, endoscopy, and liver transplantation. The book addresses the fact that nearly 30 per cent of children visiting paediatricians suffer from gastrointestinal and liver disorders.
Dr Singh said continuous upgrades in medical education are essential to meet new challenges, including complex diseases and integration of technology. He emphasised concept-based learning as the foundation for future medical practice.
The textbook, co-edited by Dr Mohammad Ishaq Malik and carrying a foreword by Prof Kathleen B Schwartz of Johns Hopkins University, builds upon the first edition published in 2016. It serves as a comprehensive resource for trainees and practising paediatricians.
