The Regional Meteorological Centre has forecasted the formation of a fresh low-pressure area over the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal by Monday, raising the likelihood of heavy rainfall across Odisha.

Under its influence, showers have already begun in several districts, with intensity expected to increase over the next 48 hours. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Alert for 24 districts today, predicting 7–11 cm rainfall, while Orange Alerts have been issued for Koraput and Malkangiri on August 18, and for Koraput and Kalahandi on August 19.

Officials have cautioned about possible waterlogging and flood-like situations, particularly in low-lying areas. Fishermen have been strictly advised not to venture into the sea between August 18 and 20 due to rough conditions.

Weather Forecast Highlights:

  • Day 1 (Aug 17–18): Yellow Alert for 24 districts; heavy rain likely in Malkangiri & Koraput.

  • Day 2 (Aug 18–19): Orange Alert for Malkangiri & Koraput; Yellow Alert for Kalahandi, Nabarangpur & Nuapada.

  • Day 3 (Aug 19–20): Orange Alert for Koraput & Kalahandi; heavy rain in Malkangiri & Bolangir.

  • Day 4 (Aug 20–21): Yellow Alert for coastal districts including Puri, Khurda, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara & Balasore.

Authorities have urged residents of vulnerable regions to remain alert as the continuous downpour may disrupt normal life in parts of the state.
