Reliance Industries and Rolls-Royce Forge Strategic Alliance to Power India’s Next-Gen Fighter Jet Engine

In a landmark move set to reshape India’s defence manufacturing landscape, Reliance Industries Limited and British engineering giant Rolls-Royce on Friday announced their strategic intent to jointly design, develop, manufacture and deliver a fully indigenous combat engine for the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme.

The partnership, unveiled simultaneously in London and Mumbai, will also explore the creation of a dedicated Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex in India — envisioned as a national centre of excellence for advanced power and propulsion technology.

The collaboration brings together Rolls-Royce’s century-old expertise in aero-engines with Reliance’s formidable industrial scale, technology capabilities, and project execution strengths. Officials described the alliance as a “compelling proposition” for joint development of the AMCA engine on Indian soil, directly supporting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of an Atmanirbhar defence ecosystem.

“India’s strategic autonomy requires sovereign capability in critical technologies,” said Anant Ambani, Executive Director of Reliance Industries. “Our intent with Rolls-Royce is to combine their world-leading expertise in advanced propulsion with Reliance’s technology, manufacturing, scale and execution capabilities to build an indigenous aero-engine ecosystem in India. Together, we aim to build an enduring national capability that can make India self-reliant and, over time, globally competitive in advanced propulsion technologies.”

Rolls-Royce CEO Tufan Erginbilgiç welcomed the partnership, stating: “I welcome the opportunity to join forces with Reliance Industries, bringing together our century-long heritage in advanced engineering and proven engine expertise with their homegrown leadership in Indian industry. Together, with our existing partnerships and capabilities in India, this marks a major milestone towards building a robust, self-reliant aerospace ecosystem in the country.”

The proposed Aero Gas Turbine Complex aims to create end-to-end Indian capability spanning design, development, manufacturing, testing, production, and through-life support. Beyond the AMCA engine, the alliance is expected to open doors for wider collaboration in defence, civil aerospace, and next-generation power and propulsion systems.

Industry observers view the announcement as a significant acceleration of India’s long-standing quest for an indigenous fighter jet engine — a critical missing piece in the country’s aerospace self-reliance journey. If successful, the partnership could position India as a serious global player in advanced propulsion technology while strengthening its strategic autonomy in defence.

The development comes at a time when India is aggressively pursuing indigenisation under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, with the AMCA programme representing the next leap in the nation’s fighter aircraft capabilities.
