Villagers discovered a young couple hanging from a tree in Kaliaposi village under Thakurmunda police limits in Mayurbhanj district on Friday morning.
Residents noticed the bodies while passing the village outskirts early in the morning. A college bag and a water bottle lay near the tree, and the couple’s bodies hung from one of its branches. Locals immediately alerted the police.
Thakurmunda police and fire service personnel reached the spot and began an inquiry. Officers recovered the bodies and sent them for post-mortem examination. Preliminary findings indicated that the deceased were lovers. The girl belonged to Kaliaposi village, while the boy hailed from Sunaposi under Karanjia police limits.
Investigators suspect the couple took the extreme step due to issues related to their love affair. Police are verifying details from both families and examining evidence found at the scene.
Authorities said the exact cause of death will become clear after the post-mortem report and further investigation.
