Police arrested a homoeopathy doctor in Badamba, Cuttack district, for running an illegal abortion clinic and rescued a woman in critical condition.
Sub-Inspector Biswa Bandita Sahoo led the operation near Sunapal Bazaar on Friday. She posed as a patient seeking abortion services to gather evidence. Police caught the accused, Jayant Bastia, red-handed while conducting the procedure.
Investigators identified Bastia as an unqualified practitioner. Though he claimed to be a homoeopathic doctor, he lacked a valid certification to run a clinic or perform medical procedures. Police confirmed that he had been operating illegally for nearly 12 years.
Authorities revealed that Bastia conducted abortions throughout the day and night, preparing patients in advance. Police suspect that sex determination tests were also carried out using a machine at the facility.
Police seized medical instruments, including a suction machine, surgical dilators, operation tools, injections, and medicines. Badamba police registered Case No. 141/2026 and placed the investigation under IIC Paramananda Nayak’s supervision.
Officials are probing whether more individuals were involved and if similar illegal clinics are operating in the region. The rescued woman remains under medical care in critical condition.
