Bhubaneswar: The Congress on Saturday picked three-time MLA and veteran leader Satya Bhusan Sahu as the party candidate for the by-election to Padmapur Assembly constituency.
His candidature has been approved by the AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge.
Sahu has a strong organizational skill. He was familiar with the constituency and has a strong base in grassroots level in the seat.
He had won from the constituency in 1980, 1985 and 2004. He lost the election in 2009 and 2019. Even though he was defeated in 2019, he had polled about 50,000 votes.
Meanwhile, Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) has decided to halt the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ in view of Padmapur by-poll. The foot march wil resume again after the election is over. It has been put on hold for some days, OPCC president Sarat Patnaik informed.
Notably, BJP announced former MLA Pradip Purohit as the nominee for the by-poll while BJD is yet to finalise its candidate.
