The sacred festival of Akshaya Tritiya was celebrated with deep devotion and cultural enthusiasm across Odisha on April 20, 2026.

Recognised as one of the most auspicious days in the Hindu calendar, the occasion is widely believed to bring prosperity, success, and positive beginnings for individuals and communities alike.

People from diverse backgrounds participated in rituals, prayers, and traditional activities, reflecting the inclusive cultural fabric of the state.

Agricultural Ritual ‘Akhi Muthi Anukula’ Marks New Farming Season

A key highlight of the festival is the traditional ritual known as Akhi Muthi Anukula, observed by farmers across rural Odisha. This ceremony symbolises the ceremonial beginning of the agricultural cycle.

Farmers sow seeds in their fields on this day, seeking blessings for a successful harvest season. Due to its deep connection with agriculture, Akshaya Tritiya is often regarded as a farmers’ festival and holds special importance in agrarian communities.

Rath Yatra Preparations Begin in Puri

The festival also marks the auspicious commencement of chariot construction for the globally renowned Rath Yatra associated with Jagannath Temple.

This ritual signals the beginning of preparations for the grand annual festival, which attracts millions of devotees and visitors from around the world. The occasion reflects the deep spiritual connection of the people with Lord Jagannath and the region’s rich religious heritage.

Chapa Khela and Devotional Activities Attract Devotees

As part of the celebrations, the deities of Lord Jagannath participate in the traditional Chapa Khela (boating festival) at Narendra Pushkarini. The event draws large crowds of devotees and tourists every year.

Religious ceremonies, temple rituals, and cultural observances were conducted peacefully, with people coming together in a spirit of unity and faith.

Security and Crowd Management Measures in Place

Authorities ensured smooth conduct of festivities with comprehensive arrangements. The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration implemented crowd management strategies, while local police deployed personnel, regulated traffic, and enhanced surveillance to maintain safety and order.

These coordinated efforts helped facilitate a safe and inclusive environment for all attendees.

Cultural Significance of Akshaya Tritiya in Odisha

Akshaya Tritiya continues to embody Odisha’s rich cultural traditions, spiritual values, and agrarian roots. The festival unites communities in shared hope, devotion, and aspirations for prosperity, reinforcing its timeless significance in the region.
