Tensions escalated across Pakistan on Wednesday as police cracked down on nationwide demonstrations marking former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s third year in detention.
Authorities detained over 100 supporters of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party during widespread rallies demanding the jailed leader’s immediate release.
Amid the intensifying unrest, PTI leadership issued a firm ultimatum to the government: if legal and visitation rights are not restored promptly, hundreds of thousands of supporters will launch a massive march toward Islamabad on September 27.
PTI Issues Ultimatum and Demands Judicial Fairness
The central gathering took place in Peshawar, the provincial capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where PTI currently holds power. Addressing a massive crowd of party faithful, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Suhail Afridi stated that the party has exhausted available judicial avenues and will now exercise its constitutional right to peaceful public assembly.
”We are seeking justice, not charity,” Chief Minister Afridi emphasized during his speech. He outlined two primary demands for the federal administration:
- Fast-tracking all pending legal cases against Imran Khan and his wife, deciding each matter strictly on merit.
- Immediately restoring full access for Khan’s legal counsel, family members, medical personnel, and senior political colleagues.
Afridi asserted that if the judiciary acts independently without external pressure, Khan could be cleared of all charges very quickly. However, if these conditions remain unmet, PTI intends to mobilize supporters nationwide for a direct march on the nation’s capital.
Police Crackdown and Media Assault Claims
As PTI activists organized demonstrations across key urban hubs, law enforcement agencies deployed heavy police presence to disperse crowds. In the Punjab region—including major cities like Lahore, Mianwali, and Rawalpindi—riot police used baton charges and tear gas to control demonstrators gathered along major thoroughfares such as Mall Road.
Footage shared across social media platforms showed police personnel using forceful tactics against peaceful demonstrators. Several journalists and photojournalists covering the events were reportedly assaulted by police officers, drawing sharp criticism from regional press freedom organizations.
Growing Health Concerns and International Calls
Imran Khan has been incarcerated since his arrest on August 5, 2023, facing a web of legal charges that his party maintains are politically motivated. Senior PTI leadership and family members have raised alarm over his deteriorating physical health while in solitary confinement. Party leaders alleged that restricted access to specialized medical care has severely impacted his eyesight.
Human rights organizations have also voiced strong concerns regarding the conditions of his detention. Amnesty International called on Pakistani authorities to immediately uphold the former prime minister’s basic legal and human rights.
”For three years, Pakistan’s authorities have systematically denied Imran Khan the right to a fair trial, subjected him to prolonged solitary confinement, and limited his access to medical care and visitation rights,” stated Isabelle Lassee, Acting Regional Director for South Asia at Amnesty International.
While the government of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif continues to deny allegations of political targeting, the upcoming September deadline sets the stage for further political confrontation across Pakistan.
