President of India Droupadi Murmu graced the 12th National Handloom Day celebrations at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre today (August 8, 2026), presenting the Sant Kabir Handloom Awards and National Handloom Awards 2025 to outstanding weavers and artisans.

In her address, the President emphasised that appropriate use of new technologies is essential for the sustainable development of the handloom sector. She highlighted the role of young entrepreneurs, designers, and startups in linking traditional crafts with modern trends, brands, and global value chains, thereby creating new opportunities for India’s weaving community.

She noted that handloom has been integral to India’s civilizational journey, reflecting diversity, fostering employment, empowering women, and promoting self‑reliance. The President recalled the Swadeshi Movement of 1905, which gave impetus to indigenous industries and handloom weavers, and said National Handloom Day is a celebration of India’s cultural unity and craftsmanship.

The event also witnessed the release of four commemorative postage stamps showcasing India’s rich weaving traditions. A total of 22 awards — including three Sant Kabir Handloom Awards and 19 National Handloom Awards — were conferred, recognising excellence in weaving, design, marketing, startups, and producer organisations.

President Murmu expressed confidence that with technology, training, and proactive support for youth, the handloom sector will serve as a robust foundation for India’s inclusive growth and self‑reliance.
