The death toll of Odia workers in the Tamil Nadu ammonia gas leak tragedy rose to eight after Subasini Juanga from Keonjhar district succumbed to injuries.
Earlier, five victims from Keonjhar were laid to rest in their native villages. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi paid floral tributes to the deceased at Bhubaneswar Airport before the bodies were sent home.
The incident occurred on Sunday at a seafood processing and export unit in Kannigaipair village near Periyapalayam in Tiruvallur district. A suspected ammonia leak exposed workers to toxic fumes, causing severe breathing difficulties, dizziness, and collapse.
Reports confirmed that around 120 migrant workers from Odisha, Assam, and Jharkhand were present when the leak happened. Several were hospitalised with serious complications.
The Odisha government deputed a three-member team to Tamil Nadu to coordinate relief measures and assist affected workers. Officials assured families of continued support, including medical care for the injured and financial assistance for the bereaved.
