L. Murugan, the Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs, has officially resigned from the Union Council of Ministers and surrendered his Rajya Sabha membership.
The senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader stated that his departure from central office is driven by a deep desire to return to the grassroots and focus entirely on expanding and strengthening the party apparatus in Tamil Nadu ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Murugan expressed profound gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling his tenure in the central government the highest privilege of his career.
“It has been the greatest honour of my life to serve Bharat Mata and Tamil Nadu under the leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji,” Murugan wrote.
Reflecting on a Humble Journey
Tracing his path from humble beginnings to national leadership, Murugan reflected heavily on his personal background. As the son of daily wage labourers, his ascent to the Union Council of Ministers stands as a testament to grassroots empowerment under Prime Minister Modi’s administration.
“From the son of daily wage labourers to serving in the Union Council of Ministers… has been the greatest privilege of my life,” he shared. Re-emphasising his commitment to the local cadre, he added, “Now, I wish to return to the grassroots, stand with our karyakartas and dedicate myself full-time to strengthening the BJP in Tamil Nadu ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.” He signed off his statement with a powerful personal ethos: “Nation First. Party Next. Self Last.”
A Stellar Track Record in Public Service
During his tenure at the Centre, Murugan handled critical portfolios. Aside from his current responsibilities in Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs, he previously managed key ministries including Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying.
Before entering active central governance, Murugan served as the vice-chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes from 2017 to 2020 and headed the BJP’s Tamil Nadu state unit.
Political analysts view his resignation as a strategic organisational pivot by the BJP, signalling a renewed, high-priority push to consolidate its electoral footprint in Tamil Nadu ahead of the 2029 general elections.
