Concern grew in Bhubaneswar after seven inmates, including Maoist leader Rupu Singh, fell ill at Jharpada Jail on Tuesday evening.
Acting on the directive of the Director General of Prisons, two DIGs—Anusuya Jena from Cuttack Jail and Biren Sahu from Headquarters—visited the jail and began a detailed investigation.
The DIGs examined CCTV footage and questioned jail staff to trace the cause of the illness. Sources said the inmates were shifted to Capital Hospital and AIIMS Bhubaneswar for treatment after they complained of uneasiness following medication. Jail officials and police initiated parallel inquiries to determine whether food, medicine, or other factors triggered the incident. Officials said one inmate has already returned, and the rest are under observation.
DIG Biren Sahu stated that investigators would explore all angles, including possible drug-related activity inside the jail. He said strict action would follow if evidence of narcotics or negligence emerged.
Jharpada Jail houses nearly 1,200 inmates, and the incident has raised questions about health and safety measures within the facility. The DG has directed officials to strengthen monitoring of food, medicine, and hygiene to prevent recurrence.
The investigation continues as authorities aim to uncover the exact cause and ensure accountability.
