A major explosion at Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City has left 54 people injured and 18 others missing, raising fresh concerns about global energy supplies and the safety of critical infrastructure in the Gulf region.
The incident occurred at the Barzan local gas supply facility, part of the Ras Laffan Industrial City, one of the world’s largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) production and export hubs.
Explosion Rocks Qatar’s Key Gas Facility
According to Qatar’s Interior Ministry, the blast occurred on Sunday evening and was later identified as an internal explosion caused by a technical malfunction.
Emergency response teams were immediately dispatched to the site following reports of an explosion and fire. Authorities confirmed that the blaze was brought under control, while rescue operations continued to search for 18 individuals who remain unaccounted for.
“A total of 54 people were injured in the incident, and efforts are ongoing to locate those still missing,” officials said.
QatarEnergy Confirms Fire During Start-Up Operations
State-owned energy giant QatarEnergy stated that the explosion occurred during the start-up phase of operations at the Barzan gas facility.
The company said emergency protocols were activated immediately, helping contain the fire and prevent further escalation.
Officials have not yet released details about the extent of structural damage to the facility, and investigations into the exact cause of the malfunction are underway.
Global Energy Markets Watching Closely
The explosion comes at a critical time for global energy markets, which have already faced disruptions due to geopolitical tensions in the Gulf region.
Qatar remains one of the world’s leading LNG exporters and plays a crucial role in supplying natural gas to Asia, Europe, and other international markets.
Any prolonged disruption at Ras Laffan could affect LNG supplies and contribute to volatility in global energy prices.
Ras Laffan’s Strategic Importance
Located approximately 80 kilometres north of Doha, Ras Laffan Industrial City serves as Qatar’s primary centre for LNG production and gas-to-liquids operations.
The facility is widely regarded as the world’s largest LNG export hub and forms the backbone of Qatar’s energy sector.
In recent months, operations at Ras Laffan have faced challenges due to regional security concerns and disruptions affecting maritime routes in the Gulf.
Rescue and Recovery Efforts Continue
Authorities are continuing search and rescue operations while medical teams provide treatment to those injured in the blast.
Government agencies and QatarEnergy are working together to assess the situation, determine the cause of the explosion, and ensure the safety of workers and nearby facilities.
Further updates are expected as investigations progress and officials release additional information regarding the missing workers and the overall impact of the incident.
