The Indian National Congress has agreed to extend support to Vijay’s party, Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), for government formation in Tamil Nadu.
However, the support comes with a clear condition: the alliance must exclude any “communal forces” that do not adhere to the Constitution of India.
Election Results and Numbers Game
TVK emerged as a major political force in the state but fell short of the majority mark. The party secured 108 seats in the Assembly, while 118 seats are required to form the government. Congress, which won five seats, has offered its backing, but even with this support, the numbers remain insufficient for a stable majority.
Formal Request and Congress Response
In a formal communication, Vijay sought Congress support to form the next government. Responding to the request, Congress stated that respecting the people’s mandate is its “constitutional duty.” The party emphasised that voters, particularly young people, have expressed a preference for a secular, progressive, and welfare-oriented government.
Alliance Based on Shared Ideals
Congress highlighted that the proposed alliance would be guided by principles of mutual respect, shared responsibility, and constitutional values. It also invoked the legacy of leaders like K. Kamaraj, Periyar E. V. Ramasamy, and B. R. Ambedkar, underscoring a commitment to social justice and inclusive governance.
Challenges in Government Formation
Despite the support, the alliance faces arithmetic challenges. With Congress’ five MLAs, the combined strength reaches 112. However, procedural factors—such as one seat being vacated for bypolls and the election of a Speaker who typically does not vote—reduce the effective strength further, making it difficult to cross the majority threshold.
Uncertain Political Scenario Ahead
The situation leaves Tamil Nadu with an uncertain political future, as TVK may need additional allies to form a stable government. Political developments in the coming days will determine whether the party can secure the required numbers or if alternative alliances emerge.
