Police arrested Biswajit Jena, nephew of Odisha Transport Minister Bibhuti Bhusan Jena, in connection with the alleged abetment of the suicide of a 20-year-old engineering student in Ganjam district.
The arrest followed the discovery of the student’s body hanging in her hostel room on Saturday.
The accused, aged 24, reportedly had a relationship with the deceased, who was pursuing a Bachelor of Computer Applications course at the same private college. Following a complaint lodged by her maternal uncle, Golanthara Police registered a case under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with abetment of suicide.
Berhampur Superintendent of Police Saravana Vivek M confirmed that investigators immediately launched a probe. Senior officers visited the hostel, while a scientific team and an executive magistrate inspected the scene. Police seized electronic devices belonging to both the deceased and the accused for forensic examination.
The student shared her hostel room with her sister and three other students. Investigators collected digital and physical evidence to determine the circumstances surrounding her death. Police stated that the exact cause will be established after the post-mortem report.
The complaint alleged that Biswajit Jena’s actions contributed to the student’s death. Authorities continue to examine forensic findings and witness statements. Further action will follow based on the investigation’s outcome.
