The brutal mob violence in Kalyansinghpur, Rayagada district, over child-lifting rumours has shocked Odisha.
The Crime Against Women (CW) team will now monitor the investigation under the direction of ADG S. Saini.
Saini stated that preventing mob violence is not solely the police’s duty but a shared responsibility of all sections of society. He emphasised that awareness must come from every level — government departments, media, and citizens. He urged people to act against mob aggression instead of recording videos during such incidents, saying that even a few individuals stepping forward could stop violence.
The ADG praised local youth Balaram Bag for his courage in rescuing the victims before police arrived. He called Bag’s action an example for others and said Odisha needs more citizens like him who stand up against mob brutality.
The incident occurred on June 16 in Intaliguda village under Kalyansinghpur block. Two NGO interns were attacked after villagers suspected them of child theft. The duo had offered biscuits to children celebrating a local festival, which triggered suspicion among villagers. The mob stripped and assaulted the woman, and the video went viral on social media.
Rayagada police swiftly rescued the victims and admitted them to the hospital. Over 23 accused have been arrested, and more arrests are expected. The case has been marked as “Red Flag.” Under DGP Y.B. Khurania’s directive, ADG Saini’s CW team continues the probe, assuring full support to the victims.
