The southwest monsoon has officially entered Odisha, bringing widespread rainfall to several parts of the state and offering relief from recent heatwave conditions. As monsoon activity intensifies, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Warning for 13 districts, cautioning residents about heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, the most significant rainfall activity is expected in southern Odisha districts, particularly Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, and Gajapati. These districts are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 50–60 kmph.

Orange Alert for 13 Odisha Districts

The IMD has warned of adverse weather conditions in several districts as the monsoon advances further into the state. Residents have been advised to remain alert, especially in low-lying and vulnerable areas prone to waterlogging and localized flooding.

Authorities have also cautioned people against venturing outdoors during thunderstorms and lightning activity.

Yellow Warning Issued Across Remaining Districts

Apart from the Orange Alert districts, the IMD has issued a Yellow Warning for the rest of Odisha, indicating the possibility of light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning in various regions.

Weather officials stated that rainfall distribution is expected to remain uneven, with southern and coastal districts likely to receive higher precipitation compared to western and interior parts of the state.

Rainfall Activity to Continue

The Meteorological Department has forecast continued monsoon activity over the next few days. An Orange Warning has also been issued for five districts on June 14, although rainfall intensity may vary across regions.

The arrival of the monsoon is expected to benefit agricultural activities, particularly paddy cultivation, as farmers begin preparing fields for the kharif season.

Advisory for Residents

The IMD has urged residents to:

  • Stay updated with official weather bulletins.
  • Avoid sheltering under trees during thunderstorms.
  • Secure loose structures and outdoor items.
  • Exercise caution while travelling during heavy rain and strong winds.
  • Follow instructions issued by local authorities and disaster management agencies.

With the monsoon now active over Odisha, weather experts expect rainfall activity to increase gradually across the state in the coming days.
