In a significant recognition of Odisha’s policing leadership, two senior IPS officers from the Odisha cadre have been empanelled by the Central Government for appointment to the prestigious Director General (DG) and DG-equivalent ranks.
The empanelment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), which cleared the names of 33 senior IPS officers from across the country for top-level leadership positions in various central security and intelligence organisations.
The two officers from Odisha who secured empanelment are Sudhanshu Sarangi and Padmakar S. Ranpise.
Sudhanshu Sarangi Gets Major Career Milestone
A 1990-batch IPS officer, Dr. Sudhanshu Sarangi currently serves as the Director General of Odisha Fire and Emergency Services.
Widely regarded as one of Odisha’s most experienced police officers, Sarangi has held several key positions throughout his career, including:
- Police Commissioner of Bhubaneswar-Cuttack
- Chairman of Odisha Police Housing Corporation
- Senior leadership roles in law enforcement and public safety
His empanelment is being viewed as a major step forward and strengthens his credentials for future leadership roles both at the Centre and within Odisha.
Padmakar Ranpise Among Top Officers Cleared
Padmakar S. Ranpise, a 1995-batch IPS officer of the Odisha cadre, is currently serving on central deputation as Additional Director General (ADG) of the Central Industrial Security Force.
Over the years, he has earned recognition for his contributions to security management and operational leadership. Recently, he represented CISF in briefings related to airport security, VVIP protection and critical infrastructure safety.
His empanelment now places him among the senior-most IPS officers eligible for DG-level appointments in central security organisations.
What DG Empanelment Means
Empanelment for the DG rank is one of the highest professional achievements in an IPS officer’s career. It makes officers eligible to head major national security and law enforcement organisations such as:
- Border Security Force
- Central Reserve Police Force
- Central Industrial Security Force
- Indo-Tibetan Border Police
These positions involve overseeing thousands of personnel and managing some of India’s most critical security operations.
Impact on Odisha’s Police Leadership
The development is also significant for Odisha’s future police leadership structure.
Administrative circles are closely watching Sudhanshu Sarangi’s elevation, as he is considered one of the strongest contenders for the post of Odisha’s next Director General of Police (DGP).
The empanelment not only enhances Odisha’s representation in national security institutions but also highlights the contribution of Odisha cadre officers to policing and public administration at the highest levels.
Recognition for Odisha Cadre
The elevation of two senior officers from Odisha reflects the growing prominence of the state’s IPS cadre in national security and governance. Their inclusion among the country’s top police leaders is expected to bring greater visibility and prestige to Odisha’s law enforcement community.
