Keeping traditional Odia folklore alive, the Ladies Club of Landmark Phase-2 Apartment Complex, located on the Sundarpada-Jatani road, staged a mesmerising dance-drama titled ‘Tapoi’ on the auspicious evening of Ganesh Chaturthi.
Residents gathered at the society’s clubhouse to witness the performance. The poignant portrayals of the central character ‘Tapoi’ and the old Brahmani woman left the audience deeply emotional and drew widespread appreciation.
Vanita Patnaik, a senior member of the society, noted that in an era dominated by nuclear families, staging such traditional stories is increasingly rare, making this a special effort to pass down cultural heritage to younger generations.
The timeless tale of Tapoi revolves around the lone sister of seven merchant brothers who faces severe mistreatment by six of her sisters-in-law following the brothers’ maritime trade voyage.
After an old woman’s interference and the loss of her favourite goat, Gharamani, Tapoi finds support from her youngest sister-in-law, who guides her to worship Goddess Mangala. This ritual becomes the origin of the Khudurukuni festival, leading to her brothers’ return, her rescue, and the triumph of good over evil.
Written and directed by Subrata Mishra, with co-direction and makeup by Jyoti Das, the play featured stellar performances by Banaprabha Sethi as Tapoi and Anindita Sarkar as the old Brahmani woman.
They were supported by Rashmi Mishra, Mamata Mohapatra, Sagarika Acharya, Vijayalakshmi Panigrahi, Sheetal Tiwari, and Rubika Satapathy. Sundarpada is renowned for preserving the Khudurukuni Osha tradition, with the final worship of the ongoing festive month scheduled for September 19.
