A five-year-old child has been fighting for survival in the ICU of Cuttack’s Shishu Bhawan for the past 17 days after allegedly consuming poisoned sweets.
The shocking incident occurred in Bahabalpur village under Salepur police limits in Cuttack district.
According to the child’s father, Rohit Kumar Mallik, a neighbour called his son on May 22 and offered him sweets laced with poison. The father alleged that previous enmity motivated the act. Soon after consuming the sweets, the child fell critically ill and was rushed to Shishu Bhawan, where doctors placed him under intensive care.
The child remains in critical condition, with doctors monitoring him closely. His father lodged a formal complaint at Salepur police station, prompting authorities to begin an investigation. Salepur SDPO confirmed that police are probing the case based on the complaint.
The incident has shocked the local community, with residents expressing outrage over the alleged cruelty. Hundreds gathered near the hospital to show support for the family. The case highlights the vulnerability of children and the devastating impact of personal disputes escalating into violence.
Police continue to investigate the neighbour’s role and are collecting evidence to establish the motive. Authorities assured that strict action will follow once the investigation concludes.
The family remains devastated as their child fights for life, and they have demanded justice and accountability for the alleged poisoning.
