Women’s Marathon Bhubaneswar Empowerment Festival

In a powerful demonstration of strength, resilience, and sisterhood, hundreds of women took to the streets of Bhubaneswar today for the International Women’s Day Marathon at Kalinga Stadium.

This event marked the triumphant conclusion of a three-day state-wide festival (6–8 March) focused on enhancing women’s health, safety, and leadership.

The marathon was officially launched by Surama Padhy, Speaker of the Odisha Legislative Assembly. As she addressed the crowd of female athletes and students, Padhy emphasised that a woman’s physical agency is the key driver of social change.

“The spirit and determination shown by these young women today is a testament to our collective future,” Padhy stated. “When a woman prioritizes her fitness and health, she lays the foundation for a stronger, more equitable society.”

The marathon showcased the rising stars of Odisha’s sports community, with three young women delivering exceptional performances:

  • Diptirani Sahoo (Tigiria Physical Education College) secured first place, demonstrating unmatched endurance and pace.
  • Sunita Santa (Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences – KISS) took second place, showcasing incredible grit and athletic skill.
  • Mamina Murmu (Maharshi College of Natural Law) finished third with a strong final kick.

This marathon served as the “Grand Finale” of a carefully curated journey designed to empower modern women:

  • Day 1 (Mindfulness): Mass yoga sessions were held across all districts, encouraging women to claim space for mental and physical peace.
  • Day 2 (Strength): Intensive self-defence workshops were aimed at equipping young women with practical skills and confidence to navigate the world safely.
  • Day 3 (Action): The Women’s Marathon saw hundreds of athletes and professionals running under the banner: “Her Progress is the Nation’s Progress.”

Also present at this occasion were Bhupendra Singh Poonia, Commissioner-cum-Secretary of the Sports & Youth Services Department, Dr Yeddula Vijay, IAS, Director of Sports, and other senior officials from the Sports and Youth Services Department.

The celebrations in 2026, organised by the Sports & Youth Services Department, concluded with a collective pledge from participants to continue breaking barriers. By prioritising women’s health, Odisha is fostering a culture in which every girl is empowered to lead.
