The Odisha government reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare and development of the Odia diaspora during the inaugural Odisha Utsav held at the National Library auditorium in Kolkata on Sunday.

Organised by the Odia Language, Literature and Culture Department, the event marked the first time such a cultural festival was held outside the state to strengthen ties with Non-Resident Odias and showcase Odisha’s vibrant heritage.

Odia Language, Literature and Culture Minister, Suryabanshi Suraj, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. In his address, the Minister described the Odisha Utsav as a key initiative to deepen bonds with the diaspora, who serve as vital cultural ambassadors promoting Odisha’s art, literature, traditions, and heritage worldwide.

Minister Suraj highlighted the enduring emotional and cultural connection Odias maintain with their roots, regardless of where they reside. He emphasised their crucial role in advancing the vision of a developed Viksit Odisha by 2036. The Minister also extended warm greetings on International Women’s Day, praising women in the diaspora for preserving and globalising Odia family traditions and values.

Reaffirming government support, Minister Suraj noted that the Directorate of Odisha Paribar actively assists Odias living outside the state, underscoring the administration’s dedication to their welfare and progress.

The event included felicitations for distinguished Odia writers from the diaspora and prominent community members. It featured captivating performances of classical and folk dances such as Odissi, Sahi Jata, Chhau, Ghumura, Dhemsa, Pashumukha, and Sambalpuri, alongside exhibitions of traditional Odia cuisine, handloom textiles, and handicrafts.

Key dignitaries present included Dr Bijay Ketan Upadhyay (Secretary, Odia Language, Literature and Culture Department), Dr Chandra Sekhar Hota (Secretary, Odisha Sahitya Akademi), Ravi Narayan Mahapatra (President, Utkaliya Milita Mancha), Bijay Kumar Barik (General Secretary, Utkaliya Milita Mancha), and representatives from various Odia diaspora organisations. Pritish Panda, Officer on Special Duty at the Directorate of Odisha Paribar, proposed the vote of thanks.

The festival celebrated Odisha’s diverse cultural legacy while fostering community connections and pride among the diaspora.
