Odisha is bracing for another spell of heavy rains as twin low‑pressure systems remain active over northern Odisha and adjoining Jharkhand, extending into Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
A cyclonic circulation stretching up to 7.6 km above sea level has intensified rainfall activity across the state.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, one location recorded extremely heavy rainfall while 21 others reported heavy showers in the past 24 hours. Agalpur in Balangir district registered the highest rainfall at 13.2 cm. Strong showers were also reported from Sambalpur, Baragada, Malkangiri, Sonepur, Jharsuguda, Nayagada, Gajapati, Debagada, Mayurbhanj, Anugola Kandhamala, Jajpur, Kataka, Sundaragada, and Kendujhar.
Forecasters warn that rainfall will persist till August 17, with another cyclonic circulation likely to form around August 13 over the Bay of Bengal, further intensifying the situation. Yellow warnings have already been issued for Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, and Sambalpur, while thunderstorm alerts remain in place across coastal and interior Odisha.
Meteorologists advise residents in low‑lying and flood‑prone areas to remain vigilant as widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in northern and southern districts. Relief teams are on standby as the southwest monsoon continues to remain highly active in August.
