Islamabad: Pakistan’s former Prime Minister and Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan’s wife Bushra Bibi demanded B-class facilities for her husband, claiming that he “can be poisoned” in the Attock jail.
The spouse of the cricketer-turned-politician wrote a letter to the Punjab home secretary and stated that Khan’s life could be in danger in the Attock jail, Geo News reported. Imran Khan was sentenced to three years in prison by a trial court in Islamabad in the Toshakhana case.
In the letter, Bushra insisted that Khan was taken to the Attock jail without any justification and noted that the court ordered him to be transferred to the Adiala Jail instead. “My husband has been imprisoned in Attock jail without any justification.
According to the law, my husband should be transferred to Adiala jail,” Bushra wrote in the letter, Geo News reported. She went on to demand that Khan should be provided with at least B-class facilities due to his political and social stature. “The reasons encompass his leadership as the former captain of Pakistan’s national cricket team, his distinguished status as an alumnus of Oxford University in the UK, and his past role as the prime minister of Pakistan,” she noted.
“Moreover, it is apprehended that he may be poisoned in the jail through food as the ones responsible and perpetrators of previous attacks are still at large and have not been captured by the law enforcement agencies,” she said.
On August 7, Khan’s lawyer Naeem Haider Panjutha touched upon the deplorable condition in which Khan was kept. “I asked Khan sahib about the situation in jail after his arrest. He said he is being kept in a dark, small, C-Class, chakki wala (manual labour) room. He said there is an open washroom there, which does not have a shower,” Panjutha told the media, Dawn reported. “He said the jail has flies in the morning and insects in the evening,” he added.
In the letter to the Punjab authorities, Khan’s wife called for an inquiry over the legality of the conditions the PTI chief was living in. She questioned why the authorities are not providing basic amenities to a person of that stature, reiterating that the conditions violate fundamental rights.
It was the duty of the jail authorities to provide him with all the facilities within 48 hours but even after a lapse of 12 days no facility whatsoever has been provided which is a disgrace to the leader of the largest political party,” she avered. “An exhaustive legal inquiry be undertaken to elucidate the legality of his current detention within your jurisdiction,” she added
