In a bid to tackle the long-standing issue of ticket scalping and ensure that genuine passengers can secure last-minute train tickets, Union Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw announced today that Bharatiya Railways will soon implement e-Aadhaar authentication for Tatkal ticket bookings.

The Tatkal scheme, introduced by Indian Railways to facilitate urgent travel, allows passengers to book tickets one day in advance of their journey. However, the system has been plagued by inefficiencies and exploitation. This has left regular passengers struggling with endless buffering on the IRCTC website or facing sold-out tickets within moments.

Vaishnaw took to X to share the update: “Bharatiya Railways will soon start using e-Aadhaar authentication to book Tatkal tickets. This will help genuine users get confirmed tickets during need.”

The new system will require passengers to verify their identity using e-Aadhaar, a digital version of the 12-digit unique identification number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).
