Odisha is currently grappling with a challenging weather scenario as the state experiences a mix of intense heat, high humidity, and sporadic thunderstorms, with no immediate relief in sight.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, the state is under the influence of Kalabaisakhi (nor’westers), bringing heavy rainfall and thunderstorms to several areas, particularly along the coast. However, the prevailing hot and humid conditions are expected to persist for at least another 24 hours, with a yellow warning issued for multiple districts.

On Wednesday, Sambalpur recorded the highest daytime temperature in the state at a scorching 39.4°C. Coastal regions, meanwhile, have been battling oppressive humidity, making conditions uncomfortable for residents. The day also saw significant rainfall in several areas, with Bhubaneswar recording the highest at 43.8 mm in the afternoon. Other districts reported substantial rainfall as well: Balasore (35.8 mm), Sonepur (34 mm), Titilagarh (20 mm), and Khordha (13 mm). These showers, accompanied by lightning and gusty winds, are characteristic of Kalabaisakhi, a seasonal weather phenomenon that brings sudden, intense storms.

Manorama Mohanty, Director of the Bhubaneswar Regional Meteorological Centre, stated that no major weather system is currently influencing the state. However, the ongoing Kalabaisakhi activity is expected to continue for another 24 hours, bringing thunderstorms and heavy rain to parts of Odisha. “After this period, the weather is likely to turn predominantly dry, but hot and humid conditions will persist, especially in coastal areas, until June 8,” Mohanty added.

Yellow Warning for Coastal Districts

A yellow warning has been issued for Thursday, June 5, covering several coastal and adjacent districts, including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati. These areas are likely to experience thunderstorms with lightning and heavy rainfall. Additionally, Balasore and Puri have been specifically flagged for potential heatwave conditions, adding to the complexity of the weather pattern.

The combination of heatwave and thunderstorms poses a dual challenge for residents. Coastal districts, in particular, are expected to bear the brunt of humid and sultry conditions, with little respite from the oppressive weather. The Meteorological Centre has advised residents to stay cautious during thunderstorms, avoid open fields, and seek shelter to minimize risks from lightning strikes.

Outlook for the Coming Days

Starting Friday, June 6, the intensity of thunderstorms and rainfall is expected to decrease across the state. However, the hot and humid conditions will continue to dominate, particularly in coastal areas. The Meteorological Centre forecasts that these conditions will persist until June 8, with no significant cooling expected in the interim.

Residents in urban centres like Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, as well as rural coastal areas, are bracing for continued discomfort. The high humidity levels, combined with temperatures hovering in the high 30s, are likely to make outdoor activities challenging. Authorities have urged people to stay hydrated, avoid direct exposure to the sun during peak hours, and take precautions during sudden storms.

Impact on Daily Life

The erratic weather has already disrupted daily life in parts of Odisha. In Bhubaneswar, Wednesday’s heavy rainfall led to waterlogging in low-lying areas, causing traffic snarls and inconvenience for commuters. Farmers in coastal districts are also monitoring the situation closely, as excessive rainfall could impact crops, while the heatwave poses risks to livestock and agricultural activities.

The Odisha government and local administrations are on alert, with disaster management teams prepared to respond to any emergencies caused by heavy rain or thunderstorms. Residents are advised to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and follow safety guidelines issued by the Meteorological Department.

Staying Safe in Extreme Weather

As Odisha navigates this period of intense weather, the Regional Meteorological Centre has emphasised the importance of preparedness. “Avoid standing under trees or in open areas during thunderstorms, and ensure you have access to safe shelter,” said Mohanty. For heatwave conditions, staying hydrated and limiting outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day are critical.

With the weather expected to remain challenging for the next few days, Odisha’s residents are urged to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions. The combination of heat, humidity, and thunderstorms underscores the need for resilience in the face of unpredictable weather patterns.
