A youth’s death at a de-addiction centre in Jajpur district triggered protests on Saturday as locals and family members alleged assault by the facility’s staff.
The deceased, identified as Rajib Lochan Barik of Bhagabanpur village under Dharmasala block, had been undergoing treatment for alcohol addiction at the Sudhara Patha Drug De-Addiction Centre in Jaraka.
Family members said Rajib returned home 15 days ago after showing improvement, but was called back to the centre for a haircut. They claimed the staff took him back and later informed them that his health had deteriorated. He was shifted to the Dharmasala Community Health Centre in critical condition, where doctors declared him dead.
Relatives alleged that Rajib was beaten inside the centre, leading to his death. The allegations sparked outrage among locals, who joined the family in staging a protest outside the facility. Protesters demanded strict action against those responsible and a thorough investigation into the incident.
Dharmasala police reached the spot, controlled the situation, and detained the operator and staff members of the Sudhara Patha Drug De-Addiction Centre for questioning. Officials confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of death and verify the assault claims.
