The iPhone 18 Pro can be ordered online and delivered to a customer’s doorstep within minutes in some locations. Yet, on launch day, people still chose to spend the night outside Apple Stores in cities such as Bengaluru, Mumbai and Delhi.
For some buyers, the wait is not simply about securing a phone. It has become part of the launch-day experience — a combination of excitement, community, status and the thrill of being among the first to own the latest device.
‘Festival’ Feeling Around iPhone Launches
In Bengaluru, one early-morning customer described the iPhone launch as a “festival”, according to news reports. Enthusiasts had travelled from different parts of the country and gathered outside the store before dawn.
In Mumbai, another customer from Nashik reportedly waited from 10 pm the previous night despite already knowing that he would receive a purchase slot. His goal was to secure one of the earliest delivery slots and upgrade from an iPhone 17 Pro Max to the new 18 Pro Max.
Similar scenes were reported outside Apple Stores in other major markets, including China, Australia, Europe and the US.
When The Queue Becomes Part Of The Product
The physical queue may appear unnecessary when online ordering is available, but consumer behaviour experts say the experience can have value of its own.
In that sense, owning the latest iPhone is only one part of the experience. Being among the first, documenting the wait and sharing the unboxing can create an additional sense of participation.
Scarcity And The Race To Be First
The launch-day frenzy is also linked to limited initial availability, popular colours and high-storage variants.
In Shanghai, some online pre-sale inventory sold out rapidly, while resellers and scalpers reportedly used automated systems to secure devices and charged additional fees for placing orders.
The resulting scarcity can push some buyers towards physical stores or resale channels, where being among the first can carry additional value.
Why Some People Upgrade Every Year
The launch-day crowd, however, does not represent the average smartphone user.
Industry trends indicate that consumers globally are keeping smartphones for longer periods. The people camping outside Apple Stores are therefore a relatively self-selected group that includes enthusiasts, resellers, content creators and buyers particularly invested in the annual launch cycle.
For these consumers, an annual upgrade can be about more than technical improvements. It can also involve brand loyalty, personal identity and the social experience surrounding a major product launch.
The Cost Of Being First
The financial aspect is another part of the equation.
The iPhone 18 Pro starts at Rs 1,64,900 in India, while the top-end 2TB iPhone 18 Pro Max is priced at Rs 3,14,900.
For buyers with sufficient disposable income, the launch-day purchase may be a discretionary expense. For others, financing the phone can have a longer-term impact on household cash flow.
More Than Just A Smartphone
The overnight queues outside Apple Stores highlight a broader change in how major technology launches are experienced.
For many customers, ordering a phone online is simply a transaction. For a smaller group of enthusiasts, however, the launch itself has become an event — complete with queues, countdowns, photographs, social-media posts and unboxing videos.
The phone may arrive at the doorstep within minutes. But for those waiting outside an Apple Store before sunrise, being there first is part of what they are buying.
