The Cricket West Indies (CWI) confirmed that it had arranged commercial travel for its players and staff after a prolonged delay in charter flight arrangements organized by the International Cricket Council (ICC).
The West Indies squad remained in India for nine days after their exit from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, waiting for a scheduled charter flight that repeatedly faced uncertainty.
In a formal statement released from Kolkata, CWI said the continued delays forced the board to step in and secure alternative travel for the team members who were still in the country.
ICC-Organised Charter Flight Faces Uncertainty
According to the board, travel and accommodation for teams during ICC tournaments are typically coordinated by the ICC. However, the planned charter flight—intended to transport both West Indies and South Africa national cricket team—was repeatedly postponed.
CWI explained that the disruption was linked to global tensions and aviation restrictions, which caused complications in finalizing the charter flight.
After days of uncertainty, the board decided it was no longer appropriate to continue waiting for the ICC-arranged travel plan.
Players Express Frustration on Social Media
The extended delay led to visible frustration among players and team officials. West Indies head coach Daren Sammy shared a brief message on social media expressing his desire to return home, reflecting the fatigue within the squad.
Meanwhile, David Miller of the South Africa national cricket team questioned why the England national cricket team had already departed while other teams were still waiting in India.
The posts quickly drew attention online and highlighted the logistical difficulties surrounding the tournament’s exit arrangements.
Commercial Flights Finally Arranged
CWI confirmed that several players and support staff had already begun their journeys home. The remaining members of the squad were scheduled to depart on March 10 and March 11, 2026, via commercial flights arranged in coordination with partners and the ICC.
The board emphasized that the decision was taken in the interest of the well-being and safety of players and support staff.
Cricket West Indies Thanks Fans for Patience
Despite the challenges, CWI concluded its statement by thanking fans and stakeholders for their understanding during the situation.
The board noted that securing commercial travel ensured a safe and timely return for the remaining members of the squad after an unexpectedly long stay following the tournament.
What began as a routine post-tournament departure ultimately turned into a logistical issue that required direct intervention from the board.
